A glitch in the system

So to catch you up on my work life (for those who don’t follow me in Instagram and might be interested). I’ve been freelancing in the design and photography world for 11 years now 🤯, although it certainly doesn’t feel like it. The variety of work always makes it feel like I’m starting something new, which I’m sure only appeals to a certain type of person. But it works for me.

A couple years ago, I was fortunate enough to join the team at GQ Australia on a part-time basis, art directing and designing the quarterly print edition of the magazine. One of the highlights of this gig has been working on the Men of The Year issue, which includes the big MOTY awards night! To be coming up with concepts and bringing them to life in print, digital and now experiential form, has been a dream and an experience in itself!

This past December, we switched up locations, going from night-time-beach 🌅 vibes at the Bondi Pavilion the year prior, to 1984-analogue-warehouse 📺 frequencies at the once abandoned White Bay Power Station in Sydney. Taking inspiration from the environments we’re hosting in helps bring an authentic atmosphere to the night, making it a sensory experience that you can even take home with you in the form of print (and/or an award) at the end of the lavish night.

Of course, none of this could have been fully executed without the wonderful internal events team at GQ Australia and the magicians at Subvrt who physically bring it to life.

On the street

On the topic of analogue (aesthetics at least), I’ve been seeing over-ear-headphones all over the place lately. Either more audiophiles have taken to the street or more people are trying to block out the noise. I know what camp I stand in. 🤫
