Documenting joy!Earlier this year, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the team at Sydney Mardi Gras. For those unfamiliar, it’s essentially Sydney’s summer pride month festival, and the energy it ignites in the city is unlike anything I’ve experienced around the world. It’s a truly special experience. My primary role was to assist the lead designer and marketing team in rolling out the 2025 campaign. This involved everything from creating social media tiles to designing a giant pink light rail wrap (something I hadn’t done since design school) that paraded up and down the CBD all month long. While designing all these assets was fun, the cherry on top was having access to capture any events I wanted to attend. This included the Leland and Friends (Troye Sivan) set at the after party and my favourite, the Sissy Ball at Town Hall, showcasing the best of Australia’s blossoming ballroom scene. It was a privilege to be backstage and even onstage to witness the magic this incredible community creates. As a photographer, finding your niche and defining your point of view takes time. While I initially thought documenting street style was my passion, I’m discovering that it’s actually the joy I’m so passionate about capturing. Whether it’s someone expressing themselves through their personal style on the street, voguing the house down the halls of Sydney’s government buildings, capturing Dog’s Best Friend around the world, or a cat show in country New South Wales, it’s the spark of joy that people tend to find in this world that captures my eye. I want to document that as best as I can.
